Such as the amount of turrents, tanks, scouts needed to make a mission. What I am learning still is the necessity of proportion. I'm currently at a point where I know how to select all units in one category, I don't create groups yet but I know my way around basic commands and assigning tasks to individual units. One needs to re-discover the way to play well. It is kind of like learning to play the piano again after 15 years. I must get into the flow of the game, understand its mentality. This is something I am working on - I need to *do* without the thinking. It has already a smart layout and I can quickly execute anything I need to, though I still have to *think* before I do. The controls are already very thoroughly placed, and very intuitive, well at least as intuitive as the PC keyboard and mouse allows. The more I play Battlezone here I understand its potential with the keyboard + mouse alone. I'm trying to imagine the layout according to the sequence of use in the game. They are available in several colors, and I'd like them to be lit by 5 volt (or 12V) bulbs. Then, infront of me I'd have all the other rows of buttons, and particular function buttons. The gorf-stick I could use on the left side manouvering the tank, plus three more functions, one of which perhaps the 'jump', or a 'shift' function, or mark an object/vehicle. I have this old analog joystick from Happcontrols, the "F-16" model with several buttons, and another digital joystick from GORF (I think) with two thumb buttons and one index finger button. Ofcourse you can learn to manage every aspect of Battlezone with a standard keyboard, but if an intuitive layout is applied to a larger and more robust panel, I think I would enjoy the game even more. I will need to scetch something up just to try the concept. I mean, it's only a matter of a good layout, and the multi-functions are just two buttons wired together, like "shift + F3", it would require an additional row of buttons. I think I could fit every function on there. So I guess the game is to be played as a standard fps-shooter, basically.Īlthough I really can't stop thinking about a controlpanel for it. I was googling for pictures on custom controlpanel for Battlezone, but came up zero. I could wire the shift function to another row of buttons for the "view", and same with the ctrl button.īut this will become a serious project for me, and so I'm guessing if there would perhaps be some custom controller, sold separately at the time, that I've missed out on completely? The tank movement I'd use a standard small digital 8-way arcade joystick, but now I've got a problem - a shift button. I'd use the game port for an analog joystick (preferable something durable like the Happ type) to control the gun aiming and weapons/fire, and I'd wire the keyboard chip to an array of lit-up buttons. I was thinking of building myself some proper controlpanel based on some old gutted keyboard. And one would still need the keyboard to dispense any commands. Even with a rudder control I imagine the feeling to be somewhat strange. Now, with the classical pilot controls an analog joystick + throttle, the controls wouldn't be sufficient. The vehicles in BZ have movement forward/backward, side strafe, and a 'jump' or "lift thrust", and the weapons aiming / vehicle front-back and sideways tilting. Has anybody played this awesome game with other controls than the standard kboard+mouse, or some standard chinese joystick?
